The Chamber of the Rainbow Sky Road

Chōkō Tenro
The Origin of the Name

"Chōkō" is a beautiful metaphorical expression used in ancient Chinese and Japanese poetry and literature to describe a scene in which a water surface or a pier stretches out, extending into the sky like a rainbow bridge.

During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, because the waters off Naha Harbor were shallow and ships could not dock, a long line of ships anchored offshore was connected to the shore by a long pier and a series of ferry boats. It seems that this scene would have been aptly described as a “long rainbow.”

Furthermore, the Ryukyu Edo Nobori sets out from Naha Port and embarks on a long, long journey to Edo. The 10-meter-long corridor at Ryusai-kan has been designed to appear even longer visually, working in unison with the ceiling murals to depict “The Long Rainbow” and “The Celestial Path.”
